How long is a 60-minute video at common speeds?
Quick reference for the most frequently used playback speeds.
0.5x120 min
0.75x80 min
1x60 min
1.25x48 min
1.5x40 min
1.75x~34 min
2x30 min

Formula: Adjusted time = Original duration ÷ Playback speed. Example: 60 min ÷ 1.5x = 40 min.

What is playback speed?

Playback speed is a multiplier applied to the normal playing rate of audio or video content. At 1x speed, content plays at its original duration. At 1.5x speed, it plays 50% faster — and finishes 33% sooner.

Most streaming platforms support 0.5x to 2x playback speed. Podcasts, audiobooks, and video players all use the same concept: the speed multiplier compresses or expands the listening time proportionally.

A playback speed calculator reverses or applies this multiplier so you can plan your time — knowing in advance how long something will take at your preferred speed.

The formula

Adjusted duration = Original duration ÷ Playback speed

60 min ÷ 1.5 = 40 min

For reverse calculation (finding the speed needed to finish by a deadline):

Required speed = Original duration ÷ Target time

90 min ÷ 60 min = 1.5x

Common examples
Real-world scenarios for playback speed calculation.

How long is a 2-hour movie at 1.5x?

120 min ÷ 1.5 = 80 minutes (1 hr 20 min). You save 40 minutes.

How long is a 45-minute podcast at 1.25x?

45 min ÷ 1.25 = 36 minutes. You save 9 minutes with light acceleration.

What speed do I need to finish a 90-minute lecture in 60 minutes?

90 ÷ 60 = 1.5x. Set your player to 1.5x to cut it down to an hour.

How long is an 8-hour audiobook at 2x?

480 min ÷ 2 = 240 minutes (4 hours). Double speed halves the listening time.

How long is a 10-minute video at 0.75x (slow playback)?

10 min ÷ 0.75 = 13 min 20 sec. Slower speed is useful for language learning.

Playback speed guide
What each speed level is best suited for.
0.5xHalf speed — great for language learning or slow review
0.75xThree-quarter speed — slightly slower than normal
1xNormal speed — no adjustment
1.25xLight acceleration — 20% time savings
1.5xSignificant acceleration — 33% time savings, still clear at normal pitch
1.75xFast playback — 43% time savings
2xDouble speed — 50% time savings, best for rewatches
Frequently asked questions

Does playback speed change the pitch of the audio?

Most modern players use intelligent pitch correction so voices sound natural at higher speeds. Older players or basic tools may raise the pitch slightly at fast speeds.

What is the best playback speed for podcasts?

1.25x to 1.5x is the most common range for podcasts. 1.25x is barely noticeable but saves 20% time. 1.5x is comfortable for hosts with clear articulation. 2x works well for content you have heard before.

Can I use this for audiobooks?

Yes. Audiobooks at 1.5x can save significant time on long titles. Fiction audiobooks are often narrated at a comfortable pace that holds up well at 1.25x–1.5x. Non-fiction with dense content may be better at 1x.

What speed is best for language learning?

Use 0.75x or 0.5x for difficult passages — slow playback helps with pronunciation and comprehension. Once familiar, 1x or 1.25x reinforces learning at a natural pace.

Does this calculator work for video lectures?

Yes. University lectures, conference talks, and tutorial videos are some of the most common use cases. 1.5x is popular for instructor-led content, while 2x works for review or well-structured how-to videos.

Is there a limit to playback speed?

Most platforms cap at 2x or 3x. Beyond 2x, comprehension drops significantly for most people. Some specialized tools allow 3x–4x for very familiar content, but 1.5x–2x is the practical maximum for new material.
