The online word counter uses browser-side processing and updates as you type. It keeps separate metrics so you can decide which number matters for your platform, editor, assignment, or publishing workflow.
Example: 你好，世界！ has 4 Chinese characters, 2 punctuation marks, 6 total characters, and 4 word units. Hello 世界 2026! has 1 English word, 2 Chinese characters, 1 number group, and 4 word units, with 14 total characters or 12 without spaces. Chinese characters are counted individually, not as segmented words.
Mixed-language example
In “Launch 2 tools 工具”, two English words, one number group, and two Chinese characters contribute five word units; punctuation and spaces remain separate metrics.
Reading-time rule
Reading time divides word units by the selected pace, whose effective value is clamped to 80-600 word units per minute, then rounds the displayed estimate up to whole minutes.
Limitations
Detected URLs each add one word unit; word boundaries still vary by language and editor. Social and SEO thresholds are drafting references, not guarantees of current platform acceptance or pixel-width display.
Comparing different counting standards
English words, Chinese characters, and mixed-language word units are not the same metric. Pick the metric that matches your editor or platform.
Ignoring spaces and punctuation
Some platforms count spaces and punctuation while others do not. Check total characters and characters without whitespace separately.
Counting messy pasted text
Extra tabs, copied line breaks, and accidental whitespace can change character and line counts. Trim spacing before relying on a limit.
Treating reading time as exact
Reading time is an estimate based on the selected pace. Dense technical text, scripts, and bilingual drafts can read faster or slower.

It shows total characters and a separate count with all whitespace removed.
Can it count Chinese text?
Yes. It counts Unicode Han-script characters, excluding spaces and common punctuation such as ， and ！, rather than segmenting dictionary words. Rare Han-script symbols can also be counted as punctuation. English words and mixed-text word units are shown separately; your editor’s rules may differ.
Can I use it for social posts?
Yes, as a drafting check. Platform limits and counting rules can change, so confirm the current limit in the destination app before publishing.
Can I adjust reading speed?
Yes. Change the word-units-per-minute field; the page clamps the effective value to 80 through 600 word units per minute.
How accurate is reading time?
It is word units divided by your selected pace and is only an estimate. Dense text, code, images, pauses, and bilingual reading behavior are not modeled.
How is mixed-language text counted?
Word units add English word matches, Han characters, and number groups outside URLs, plus one unit per detected URL. The separate Chinese-character total still includes Han characters inside URLs. Emoji, punctuation, and whitespace do not become word units.
