Fraction Calculator Guide

How to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and simplify fractions before using the result in notes, recipes, or homework checks.

Quick answer

Enter two fractions and choose an operation to calculate or simplify the result. Review whether the answer should stay as a fraction, decimal, or mixed number.

What this tool does

The fraction calculator handles basic fraction arithmetic. It is useful for classroom checks, recipes, measurements, craft plans, and notes that need exact fractional values.

Step-by-step use

  1. Enter the numerator and denominator for each fraction.
  2. Choose add, subtract, multiply, or divide.
  3. Calculate the result.
  4. Review the simplified form.
  5. Convert to decimal or percentage only if needed.

Data handling and processing behavior

Fraction calculations are handled in the browser for this tool. Avoid entering sensitive records unless you have reviewed the implementation.

Examples

Recipe math. 1/2 plus 1/4 equals 3/4.

Measurement check. 3/8 multiplied by 2 equals 3/4.

Assumptions and limits

  • Denominators cannot be zero.
  • Decimal approximations may lose exactness.
  • The result is a calculation helper, not a substitute for official coursework or engineering review.

Review example

For recipe scaling, keep the fractional result beside the decimal result. 3/8 + 1/4 = 5/8 is easier to use with measuring spoons than 0.625, while a decimal may be better for spreadsheet notes. If the number will be copied into a purchase list or classroom answer, note which representation is expected before rounding.

Common mistakes

Adding denominators directly. 1/2 + 1/4 is not 2/6.

Dividing by zero. Any fraction with a zero denominator is invalid.
